Overview: Tula's Home Bakery is a package design system for a gluten-free home bakery. Due to the small scale of the home bakery, there's only so much you can do with packaging, because most things have to be ordered in bulk. The likelihood that you'll have the business consistently enough for that one item you got a label for is less likely than getting something that can be used more universally. This creates a few possibilities, including labels for pop-up bakeries or fairs, and for use as part of a bundle. It also has to emphasize the homemade feel, with custom-order sheets to be filled out and placed in the box, and one kept for the store. From the logo to the border, the system gives off the feeling of a homemade cake, simple, delicious, reminiscent of a chocolate cake in design. Throughout the design, there are also a few hints of allergen awareness, such as allergen listings, the allergen section of the order form, and labeling. I used a combination of Illustrator and Photoshop to create my designs.
I first started by creating the logo. I designed it to look as if it were piped with a piping bag. I based this on the typeface Esprit Script, which is also the apostrophe. A sans-serif font is used to contrast with the main type in the logo, Kigelia Adlam semi bold.
I created a variety of stickers, from simple to complex, for the business. For one that is ordered only, there is the order sheet and order identification stickers, which just have a spot for the Name associated with the order. There’s also a blank labeling sticker that allows additional ingredients or other information to be added. Versatility was my main goal; for instance, you will see that the design on the side of a box and on the wrapping of a single cookie is the same.
I designed various packaging options. I tried to focus on things that would be nice little branding touches and on items that would only need to be purchased once or twice, based on the amount of business. I started with individual labels for product identities for items that could be purchased easily online and shipped, or sold at a booth.
